King’s Day ’14

Since before I was born, every spring saw the celebration of Queen’s Day. Last year, Queen Beatrix abdicated and Willem Alexander took the throne, so the term “King’s Day” still feels a little weird.

For those who aren’t familiar, it’s a great big party, the main feature of which is a national free market license that permits every citizen of any age to sell their stuff on the streets, turning every city and town into a massive yard sale. All manner of decrepit, undesirable junk is splayed out on blankets and hawked by kids, parents and other mercantile opportunists, who often stake out the best real estate a day in advance.

Orange is everywhere, people have their faces painted in the old red-white-and-blue, the streets ring with music and screeching voices proclaiming what bargains and savings are to be had.

I love it 🙂
